asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if the visible trade deficit with Japan has been reduced in the first half of 1985 as compared with the equivalent period in 1984; and if he will make a statement.

The latest available figures show that our provisional bilateral trade deficit with Japan in the first five months of 1985 was £1,331 million compared with £1,169 million in the corresponding period last year.
