Mr. Waller
asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action his Department is taking to enable derelict land of less than one acre to be put on the register of derelict land.

Land does not have to be derelict before it can be entered on the land registers. At present, public bodies are required to register unused and underused sites of one acre or more in their ownership. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State is, however, empowered to register underused publicly owned land whatever its size. On 7 June he announced that he is prepared to consider registering sites below one acre when they are brought to his attention by the private sector. We are not asking public bodies to register all the sites they own.
