Short asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many residents of his Department's resettlement units have been discharged from a mental hospital in each year since 1979.

It is not possible to obtain this information for the period January 1979 to February 1982 as some of the relevant, papers have been destroyed as a matter of routine. The remaining information is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

Short asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what financial support has been given by his Department to each of his Department's resettlement units during the past two years.

The gross amount of financial support given by the Department to each of its resettlement units and combined resettlement unit/re-establishment centres for the past two years is given in the table.

Short asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will allocate additional resources to local authorities to enable suitable alternative provisions to be made for those citizens who reside in his Department's resettlement units after the proposed closure.

The regional reviews presently being undertaken involve consultation not only with voluntary organisations but with local authorities and will consider the replacement provision in the light of their findings in a particular area. The review teams will consider proposals coming forward from both the voluntary sector and local authorities before making their recommendations. Details of funding arrangements cannot be finalised until the reports by the regional review teams have been completed.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total number of citizens who have been accommodated in resettlement units administered by his Department since 1979.
