asked the Secretary of State for Transport what recent representations he has received from staff at the Glasgow works of British Rail Engineering Limited concerning the future of the United Kingdom rail engineering industry.

Since the beginning of the year we have received four letters about the future of BREL's Glasgow works, including one from an employee. Also, a group of BR and BREL trade unionists recently raised the matter with me. In each case I explained that this was a matter for management decision by BREL and the British Railways Board.
