asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what response he has made to the approach by the British Medical Association to his Department about its proposals to set up an independent national committee to provide ethical guidelines for research ranging from drug trials to tests of techniques and treatment.

Our officials have met the British Medical Association informally to discuss these proposals. We have asked to be informed of the progress of the association's wider consultations with interested bodies.
