asked the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has for European Road Safety Year.

We shall use the year to highlight road safety initiatives in the field of legislation and research. Our publicity programme, and the efforts of other bodies, will be designed to increase public awareness of road safety problems in this country and abroad. Plans are also being developed in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
