asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Danish Government about the renewal of the European ban on the import of baby seal products.

The Community is currently considering proposals put forward by the Commission for an indefinite extension of the European Community ban on imports of baby seal products which expires on 30 September. My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister made clear our support for an extension of the ban on conservation grounds in her reply to a question by my hon. Friend the Member for Rutland and Melton (Mr. Latham) on 21 June. This position was placed on record by my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Environment, the hon. Member for Bristol West (Mr. Waldegrave) at the 28 June Environment Council, at which Denmark was of course represented.
