asked the Secretary of State for Transport what further repairs to the M1 motorway are expected during the second six months of the current year.

Four major renewal schemes are programmed to be carried out on the M1 in the second half of this year. One, the junction 8 scheme, finished on 11 July, five days ahead of schedule. The other three will be in Buckinghamshire, Leicestershire and South Yorkshire. There will in addition be minor repairs taking place from time to time.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he made of the effect on traffic flows at junction 8 of the M1 in the first two weeks of July of his Department's recent publicity campaign regarding the repair works being carried out there.

The two-way traffic flow through junction 8 was reduced by over 40,000 vehicles per 16-hour day during the critical period of the works, undoubtedly as a result of our publicity campaign and the other measures adopted.
