asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the current tax cost in mortgage interest relief of each 1 per cent. increase in interest rates.

The direct revenue cost of mortgage interest relief from a 1 percentage point increase in mortgage interest rates would be about £350 million at current levels of lending, if the increase were to apply for a full year.
