asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make representations to the European Economic Community regarding the compatibility with European Economic Community regulations of the offering by the French Government of subsidies designed to attract employment to France from the United Kingdom; what representations he has received about the proposed transfer by the Terreco Group of work from Case Tractors in Meltham and Leigh to various establishments in France; and if he will make a statement.

I understand the European Commission have approached the French authorities about the package of French Government support made available following the J. I. Case acquisition of the International Harvester tractor operations in France. The Government have received many representations on the future of the Meltham and Leigh plants notably from the hon. Member for Colne Valley. The Government have discussed and continue to discuss the future manufacturing operations of J. I. Case in the United Kingdom with senior management from Tenneco and its J. I. Case subsidiary.

Sincerely,

Alex
