asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the latest available figures for gross average earnings in Great Britain, in Scotland, and in rural Scotland.

The estimated average gross weekly earnings in April 1984 of full-time employees on adult rates were £159·30 in Great Britain, £155·70 in Scotland, and £159·50 in the area of the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, Grampian, Highlands, Island Areas and Tayside local authorities, the Scottish Regions which cover most of rural Scotland. Estimates of gross average earnings are not available below regional level.
