asked the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State answering in respect of the Arts whether the posts of directors of the national museums in England and Wales are graded mobile or non-mobile for the purpose of employment conditions.

The directors of the OAL-funded national museums and galleries in England are not civil servants but are employees of the trustees of the museum or gallery concerned. Mobility under civil service conditions of employment does not therefore arise in these cases. Questions on the position of national museum directors elsewhere in the United Kingdom are matters for my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland as appropriate.
