asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many shipyards the Government intend to leave in the public sector.

Following the privatisation by March 1986 of British shipbuilders' (BS) warship activities, seven BS yards and Harland and Wolff PLC will remain in the public sector. In the longer term we hope that improved performances, coupled with improved market conditions, will enable as many as possible of these yards to return to the private sector.
