asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of children refused admission to each mother and baby unit in 1984 and so far in 1985, giving the reason for the refusal arid the subsequent disposal of the child.
In 1984 three babies were refused admission to the unit at Holloway, one because of the length of the mother's sentence and two because the unit was full. Two babies remained with their grandparents and one remained with a friend of the mother.Up till 18 October 1985 two babies have been refused admission to the unit at Askham Grange, one because of its age, the other following advice from probation and social services departments. One remained with foster parents and the other with relatives. Two babies have been refused admission to the unit at Holloway because of lack of space. One remained with its father, the other with a friend of the mother. There is no record of any baby being refused admission to the unit at Styal over this period.
