asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what national provisions exist for providing standardised information on a continuing basis to health visitors throughout the United Kingdom to ensure a consistent approach between health authorities and to disseminate models of good practice.

A package of performance indicators has been sent to health authorities to help local management identify aspects of service performance which warrant investigation and to offer them pointers to appropriate action for improving services. Indicators particularly relevant to health visitors are:

  • —numbers of children seen in a year
  • —vaccination and immunisation rates
  • —number of health visitors visits per 1,000 population
  • —number of over 65s seen by health visitors
