asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the number of hip replacement operations which took place under the National Health Service over the past 12 months.

In 1983, the latest year for which information is available centrally, there were an estimated 35,800 hip replacement operations on National Health Service patients in National Health Service hospitals in England.
