asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many land register directions he has issued in each of the last three years; and if he will make a statement.

Under section 98 of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980 directions to dispose of unused and underused publicly owned land entered on the land register have been made as follows:

My right hon. Friend has this year given the owners of 56 further sites notice under section 99 of the Act of his proposals to direct them to dispose of those sites. Since the register was established in mid-1981, 38,000 acres of land have been removed, for the most part because they have been sold or brought into use by their owners.
