asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what increase is to be made in the amount that can be spent on repairs to houses qualifying for grant under the legislation on defective houses; and whether he will make a statement.

My Department is presently consulting the local authority associations and other interested groups on our proposals for revising the expenditure limit for reinstatement works attracting grant under the housing defects legislation. Our proposals are for a four-tier limit, according to likely difficulty of repair, as follows:

Group A—proposed limit £12,000

  • Cornish Unit with one-storey PRC elements
  • Tarran
  • Gregory

Group B—proposed limit £16,000

  • Cornish Unit with two-storey PRC elements
  • Airey
  • Stent
  • Unity and Butterley
  • Dorran
  • Myton
  • Newland
  • Stonecrete

Group C—proposed limit £20,000

  • Reema
  • Wates
  • Woolaway
  • Boot
  • Parkinson
  • Smith
  • Underdown
  • Winget

Group D—proposed limit £24,000

  • Orlit
  • Dyke
  • Schindler and Hawksley SGS
  • Waller
  • Wessex

Any other types not listed (local designations) would remain at £14,000.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations he has received on his proposals to reduce the eligible cost limit for the repair of Cornish unit 1 houses.

To date we have received representations from two local authorities concerning the proposed reduction of the housing defects eligible expenditure limit (from £14,000 to £12,000) for the Cornish unit type with one storey PRC elements.
