asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has about the closure of the casualty department at Manchester Royal infirmary.

The accident and emergency department at Manchester Royal infirmary has not closed. For a 48-hour period from 4.30 pm on Tuesday 24 February those patients attending the department who required emergency in-patient treatment were allocated beds in other hospitals serving Manchester in line with standing arrangements.
