Mr. James Hamilton
asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement regarding the future of the British Steel Corporation Clydesdale works in Mossend; and whether any merger is planned for the foreseeable future.
Mr. Giles Shaw
There is substantial excess capacity in the seamless tubes sector. BSC's response to this is primarily a matter for the Corporation's management; and no proposals have been put to the Department in respect of actions, such as a merger, which would require the Secretary of State's consent.
