asked the Paymaster General how many persons are currently employed in the leisure industry; and how this compares with 1983 and 1980.

There is no generally agreed definition of the leisure industry in terms of the standard industrial classification, but the number of employees in sectors which most directly serve tourism and leisure activities was just over 1ยท3 million in September 1986, an increase of 10 per cent. over September 1983 and of 11 per cent. over September 1980.
