asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many supplementary benefit claims were referred to the office of the Chief Adjudication Officer for investigation of a claimant's entry status in the 12 months to the end of October 1986; and if he will provide a breakdown of the nationalities of those claimants;(2) how many of the total number of supplementary benefit claimants referred to the office of the Chief Adjudication Officer for investigation of entry status were referred from local offices of his Department in the London north and London south regions, respectively; and if he will provide a breakdown of the nationalities of those claimants.

Information is not available in precisely the form requested. Between 21 October 1985 and 21 October 1986, 1,470 supplementary benefit claims by people from outside the European Community were referred to the office of the Chief Adjudication Officer; a breakdown of these by nationality is not available. During the same period 1,587 claims by European Community nationals were notified, the breakdown of these by nationality being:
