asked the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he has taken recently to re-examine the need for crash barriers on the A45 between Bury St. Edmunds and Ipswich; and if he will make a statement.

The A45 is being reviewed following the initiative I announced in December for providing central safety fencing on the majority of dual carriageway trunk roads. As a first step, fences are to be added to a contract for structural maintenance between Stowmarket and Beacon Hill which is to be let shortly. A programme will be drawn up for additional fencing where justified, and as resources allow. The work will need to be spread over a period of years.
