asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has received any complaints concerning the alleged political activities of charities, and of Oxfam in particular.

Such complaints are received from time to time. They are a matter for the Charity Commission which has issued detailed guidelines on political activities by charities.

payment of rates in each of the last 11 years is published annually in "Prison Statistics England and Wales" (table 6ยท2 of the latest volume, for 1985, Cmnd. 9903). The following table gives details of the length of committal of those received in 1975, 1980 and 1985 on committal by all courts. Further information could be supplied only at disproportionate cost. Data for 1986 are not yet available.
