Mr. Raynsford
asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his latest estimate of the number of tenants who have (a) applied for and (b) received payment for repairs carried out under the right to repairs scheme; and what is the total cost of payments under the scheme.
Mr. Tracey
Provisional estimates are that about 800 applications under the right to repair scheme were submitted to English local authorities in 1986, of which 80 were accepted. In about 310 cases the landlord elected to carry out the repair within 28 days, 270 were rejected as outside the scheme and another 110 for other reasons. During the year, about 45 claims for payment were received by the authorities and 40 of these were agreed for a total of around £4,000.
