Mr. David Marsarshall
asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will prepare an estimate of the effect of the Budget on present levels of unemployment in Scotland.
Mr. MacGregor
The Budget continues the Government's policies creating a vigorous and expanding economy which is the surest route to increasing employment in all parts of the country, including Scotland. The reduction in taxation which my right hon. Friend announced improves incentives, and, if reflected in lower pay settlements, will make it easier for employees to take more people on. The reduction in borrowing maintains the conditions which have allowed inflation to fall to levels not seen for two decades, and which create an environment where industry can invest and enterprise can flourish.
