asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the resources available to police forces to enforce road traffic legislation.

It is a matter for individual chief officers of police to determine how best to deploy their resources in the light of local conditions. The total strength of the police service in England and Wales on 30 November 1986 was 121,732 (an increase of 10,239 since May 1979), of whom about 8 per cent. are deployed on specialist traffic duties. Uniformed officers performing general duties also take action to enforce road traffic legislation.
