asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the progress and scale of the prison building programme.

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply given to a question from my hon. Friend the Member for Gainsborough and Horncastle (Mr. Leigh) on 20 November 1986.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many additional prison places will be created by 1991 through the prison building and refurbishing programmes.

By 1991 we shall have created about 9,900 additional places. Of this 5,100 will be in purpose-built new establishments (three of which have already been opened) and a further 4,800 places through redevelopment schemes at existing establishments.
