asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many National Health Service staff there were in the United Kingdom in (a) June 1979 and (b) February 1986, respectively.

Figures for September 1979 and September 1985 are shown in the table. Figures were not collected centrally for June 1979 and February 1986.

A breakdown of these figures by local authority for 1985 is not yet available. The provisional total for England is 598 children, a decrease of 16 per cent. over 1984. This compares with an 8 per cent. decline in the total figures for children in care.
