Submarine Orders

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement concerning the latest position regarding submarine orders.

There are currently eight submarines on order, of which five—a Trident SSBN, a Trafalgar class SSN and three Upholder class SSKs—were ordered last year. On future orders, I refer the hon. Member to the answers given to the hon. Member for Greenock and Port Glasgow (Dr. Godman) on 16 January 1986 at column 642 of the Official Report and that given to my hon. Friend the Member for Barrow and Furness (Mr. Franks) on 24 March 1987 at column 139 of the Official Report.
