asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what progress has been made in the discussions between the European Investment Bank and Eurotunnel on the provision of the £1,000 million loan for the Channel tunnel project; if a decision has yet been made on the guaranteeing of the loan; and if he will make a statement.

A possible loan will be discussed at the next meeting of the board of directors. The question of guarantees will be one of the matters for consideration but it is accepted that there can be no question of a guarantee by the United Kingdom Government.
