asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many jobs have been created or safeguarded in the Northern region through regional development grants and regional selective assistance in each year since 1983.
The number of jobs expected to be created or safeguarded in the northern region' through offers of new-style regional development grant and regional selective assistance in each financial year since 1983 are as follows:
New-Style Regional Development Grants
Regional Selective Assistance
1 The Northern Region is the North East Region plus Cumbria.
2 The new-style RDG came into force with effect from 29 November 1984.
(1) Since old-style RDG's were not linked to the creation or preservation of jobs no estimate is available of the effect on employment of payments under that scheme.
(2) Some RSA and RDG offers will relate to the same jobs but it is not practicable accurately to identify these.
(3) The figures for both schemes are based on offers made.
