asked the Secretary of State for Transport if, in the light of the representations from the hon. Member for Oxford East concerning congestion at the A40 Headington junction, he will make a statement on his proposals for alleviating this problem.

A scheme for grade separation at the A40 Headington junction is one of the 82 additions to the national trunk road construction programme which we announced on 28 April. The next step will be the appointment of design agents to investigate possible options for this major improvement. Meanwhile, we are considering with Oxfordshire county council a small modification to the layout of the roundabout to reduce traffic delays in the interim.I acknowledge my hon. Friend's campaign and concern for the scheme.
