To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is prepared to provide extra funding for guardians ad litem in view of the representations made by the consortium of Bradford, Leeds and Calderdale authorities.

The extra cost for local authorities of establishing the guardian ad litem service was taken into account in the rate support grant settlement for the year after the scheme was introduced. I am considering a letter from the chairman of Bradford metropolitan council's social services committee, and I shall send the hon. Member a copy of my reply.
