To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how much his Department spent on research into schizophrenia in each of the last five years; and what proportion each figure was of expenditure on the Health Service research programme.

In addition to expenditure by the Medical Research Council, which receives its grant-in-aid from the Department of Education and Science, the Department's expenditure on directly commissioned mental illness research over the last five years is as follows.
