To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what were the total administrative costs, including wages and salaries, of local government in Scotland in 1986–87.

The best available estimate of the costs classified by Scottish local authorities as central administrative costs, including wages and salaries, in respect of relevant current expenditure in 1986–87 is £14·13 million.
