To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement regarding the Government's guidelines on voluntary nutrition labelling.
The Government's guidelines for a voluntary system of nutrition labelling were issued on 24 July 1987. They were introduced as a result of interest in nutrition labelling, both on the part of consumers and the food industry. They aim to encourage a standard approach to nutrition labelling which is clearly important for consumer information and choice. I hope that the relevant trade organisations will commend the guidelines to their members so that maximum uptake by the industry is achieved.
