To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many members of the Ulster Defence Regiment are currently estimated to be Catholics; what proportion this represents of the regiment's manpower; and what proportion of the recruitment to the regiment in 1985 was from the Catholic community.

About 3 per cent. of members of the Ulster Defence Regiment have declared their religion as Roman Catholic. Just over 4 per cent. of those accepted for service during 1985 declared their religion as Roman Catholic.
