To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what is the number of funded establishment (a) nurses and (b) midwives in each district health authority;(2) how many vacancies for nurses and midwives there are in each (1) district health authority and (2) regional health authority; and what is the ratio of vacancies to funded establishment for nurses and midwives for each (1) district health authority and (2) regional health authority.

I regret that the information requested is not collected centrally. Some information will, however, become available in the course of next year as a result of the introduction of improvements in National Health Service information systems.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services which district health authorities provide child care facilities for pre-school age children of nurses or midwives.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what is the percentage change in the use of agency (a) nurses and (b) midwives between 1979 and the latest date to which figures are available;(2) what is the percentage change in the use of agency

(a) nurses and (b) midwives between the last two years for which figures are available.

There was a 21·4 per cent. increase in the use of agency nurses and a 30·4 per cent. increase in the use of agency midwives in England between September 1979 and September 1986. Between September 1985 and September 1986 the figures were 39 per cent. and 15·4 per cent., respectively.
