To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services for what reason Whipps Cross hospital has been placed on red warning for admissions; what are the implications for services (a) now and (b) during the rest of the winter; and if he will make a statement.

Waltham Forest health authority is responsible for services at Whipps Cross hospital. I am advised that it has recently had to make some restrictions on admission because of increased winter pressure, staff shortages, and a ward closed for the decant of patients for the start of phase I of the redevelopment of the hospital.
