Mortgage Interest Tax Relief

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make an estimate of the number of people buying homes in the United Kingdom with the benefit of mortgage tax relief over the latest period for which figures are available.

It is estimated that about 8·4 million tax units are benefiting from mortgage interest relief in 1987–88.
