New Workers Scheme

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what representations he has received on the decision to cease the recruitment of applicants to the new workers scheme.

Since the announcement on 3 November this year of the scheme's impending closure, my hon. Friend the Member for Battersea (Mr. Bowis) and the hon. Member for Birkenhead (Mr. Field) have both raised questions on the subject. I refer the hon. Member to my replies in the Official Report, 6 November, at column 725, and 7 December, column 31, respectively. A reply to the hon. Member's recent letter to me about the scheme's closure will be with him shortly.
