To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the current inclusive cost of maintaining community health councils; and how many full-time and part-time people are employed by them.

The total cost of community health council expenditure in 1986–87, the latest available figure, was £7.2 million. This figure includes staffing, premises and other costs.Regional health authorities are responsible for the number and grading of community health council staff.No information is held centrally on how many full and part-time staff are employed by community health councils.
