To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what talks he has had with district councils to discuss the installation of smoke detectors in every home; and if he will make a statement.

My Department is currently undertaking a study of the potential of automatic smoke detection as a means of improving life safety in residential buildings and a review of other research. The results of the review will be published. We will certainly inform the local authority associations of the outcome and give them the opportunity to discuss the implications.
