To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what provision he is proposing to make with hospitals for pathology and X-ray tests, in the light of the proposal in the White Paper, "Promoting Better Health", that patients newly registering with the National Health Service have a health check.

It will be for the family doctor to decide whether pathology and X-ray tests are needed, but it is unlikely there will be many such instances. We do not therefore envisage the need for special provision in hospitals for this purpose.
