To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether there are plans to upgrade the current police national computer link into a fully integrated network which would allow connections between any police computer on the network;(2) if he will state the extent to which the new packet switched network for the police national computer will involve the linking of police computers; and if he will make a statement.

Work is in hand to replace the current police national computer network by an X25 packet switched network which will be compliant with the Government Open Systems Interconnection Protocol (Wide Area Networks) standard. This network would provide a means of linking police computers.
