To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his latest figure for the expected level of spending on (a) the hospital service and (b) the National Health Service as a whole in 1987–88.

The latest estimate of outturn for the year 1987–88 are gross expenditure of £1,697 million on hospital and community health services and £2,334 million on the National Health Service as a whole.
