To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science, how many were employed in local education authorities who were neither lecturers nor teachers in 1961, 1971, 1981 and at the latest convenient date.

Figures for 1961 and 1971 are not available centrally; the numbers of full-time equivalent staff employed in local authorities in education in England and Wales who were neither lecturers nor teachers were 398,000 at March 1981 and 402,000 (provisional) at June 1987, the latest available date.
