To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the phasing out of Polaris, in the light of the delays in the operational production line for warhead components.

As my right hon. Friend reaffirmed to the House on 21 January at column 775, Trident remains on programme to enter service in the mid-1990s. In the meantime, the United Kingdom Polaris force will remain fully operational and effective. The Polaris force will be progressively phased out after the entry into service of Trident.
