To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total expenditure by his Department on management consultants on health matters each year since the introduction of general management in 1984.

The expenditure by the Department in 1984–85, 1985–86, 1986–87 and the estimated expenditure for 1987–88 on fees and expenses for outside consultants on health matters are as follows:

The figures are approximate. In some cases expenditure has been apportioned where consultants have been employed on both health and social security matters. The figures include social services consultancy.
